Will PCR testing still be required after COVID-19?

The Ministry of Health in Israel announced that as of June 15^th, the indoor mask regulations will be appealed. So, besides isolation/quarantine, there will effectively be no COVID-19 restrictions for people inside Israel. 

Many people wonder which health recommendations will remain after COVID-19 is gone. Will people still clean their hands regularly with alcohol gel? Will people wear masks when they are sick or in medical offices? And will PCR testing still be required to detect other viruses?

Most people do not realize that the PCR test has been around for a while. PCR tests are commonly administered to detect microbial pathogens and diseases, including genetic and autoimmune diseases. PCR tests are relatively fast, eliminating the need for unnecessary procedures to identify a virus. PCR tests are cost-effective relative to other testing options. PCR testing is considered the "gold standard" for identifying the COVID-19 virus and other diseases because of its speed and accuracy. They are likely to remain even after the COVID-19 pandemic has ended.

When do you need to get a PCR test?

Most countries still require those who enter the country to do a PCR test, proving that they do not have COVID-19. Flights also require people to have a negative PCR test before flying to limit the spread of infection. 

People also need to do PCR tests if exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19. 

How and where can we get PCR tests?

Israel has one of the lowest rates of COVID-19 in the world. Therefore, PCR tests are no longer available unless an individual is experiencing medical symptoms of COVID-19. People exiting Israel who require a PCR test for COVID-19 are required to be tested through an approved private company. 

Many labs do PCR tests, but they aren't always conveniently located, and the results take a few days to come back.
