People with gluten-free diets often struggle with traveling and touring, as their diets can be challenging. Good news:  Israel is becoming more aware of the need for gluten free food.

In this article, EMA Care gives guidance to gluten-free eating in Israel.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which gluten damages the small intestine.   The number of people diagnosed with the disease is 1 out of 133, or a little under 1% of the USA’s population.  HOWEVER, it is estimated that 83% of the people with celiac are misdiagnosed or undiagnosed!!  Research shows celiac disease is also on the rise in young adults in Israel.

The only known treatment for celiac disease is a lifetime commitment to a gluten- free diet. People eating a gluten-free diet must be aware at all times what ingredients are being used in their food preparation.  Even crumbs from a toaster could result in small intestine damage.

If you are careful, by asking the right questions in restaurants and hotels , it is possible to enjoy Israeli cuisine wherever you go!

Good news: A lot of restaurants in Israel have adapted their menus to include gluten- free choices.  Supermarkets have a decent selection of gluten- free products.

Spending time in Israel, as a tourist or on a year-long program, you may be hosted by families in their homes.  It’s extremely important to alert the family to your diet restrictions well before you arrive to their home.  Most hosts are happy to accommodate you but definitely need some notice to prepare gluten-free choices.

An important phrase to learn in Hebrew is ללא גלוטן  , pronounced “L’lo gluten”  meaning  “without gluten”.   While shopping  READ LABELS, and look for the phrase ללא גלוטן on each package. The problem is, there is hidden gluten (not labeled) in  many less obvious products. Calling the manufacturer may be needed for checking out spices and other products.
