Managing a pre-existing condition in Israel
Sending your child to Israel for a gap year is an exciting time, your child will develop themselves, better understand their Jewish heritage, and will mature as a young adult. This can be a nerve-wracking time for any parent as your child is thousands of miles/kilometers away. For those with a pre-existing condition an extra layer of organisation is required as medical insurance companies will not cover pre-existing conditions. This leaves parents to rely on the Yeshiva or Seminary to organize care for their child. Additionally, parents will need to pay out of pocket for routine care related to their child’s pre-existing condition. Here are some tips to help you ensure your child receives the care they require during their gap year.
- Get a care plan from your child’s treating physician
To ensure your child receives continuity of care have their treating physician provide a care plan. This plan will assist care providers in Israel and ensure your child receives the care they need. The care plan should include:
- A summary of their current health status
- What treatments they are currently receiving and how often
- Any medications they are currently taking with doses and the frequency they receive the medication
- Any follow up required and how often (physician assessments, bloodwork, etc.)
- What to do if your child has an exacerbation of their pre-existing condition
- Ensure your child’s medications are available in Israel
Medications are not as readily available in Israel as they are in the United States or other countries. Example, Adderall XR is commonly used outside of Israel. However, this medication is not available and only the short acting version is available in Israel. Work with your child’s treating physician to convert their medication to one available in Israel, this will help identify any issues prior to them arriving. If converting their medication is not an option, source a way to get them their medications.
- Know the cost of non-covered medical needs
Medical insurance companies will not cover routine care for pre-existing conditions. Understanding the costs associated with providing proper care for your child will help you create a plan. Out of pocket costs include but are not limited to:
- Physician visits
- Medications and their administration
- Bloodwork
- Imagining (MRI, CTs, X-Rays)
