Crohn's Disease

Crohn's disease in Israel can be challenging to manage, especially for non-residents and students, who don't understand the Israeli medical system and who don't have access to full health care services.

Crohn's disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that may affect any segment of the gastrointestinal tract from where food enters to where it exists. Although is common among all age groups, it is especially common among young adults (before the age of 30). The most common symptoms are abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, and weight loss.

Ashkenazi Jews are at significantly higher risk for Crohn's disease, and research is being conducted to understand what causes the illness and how it is connected to Ashkenazi genes. Crohn's disease in Israel has become a priority for local researchers, as it affects a relatively large percentage of the population (compared to other countries).

Due to the fact that Crohn's disease is very common in Israel, there are many centers that help people deal with the disease. There are many organizations in Israel that help people with Crohn's disease and help provide support and guidance in all aspects of the patients' lives.

  1. The CCFI – a center for Israeli's dealing with Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis. They provide support and education for families, as well as, empowering patients, and normalizing the reality of the disease.
  2. IBD – is a center in Hadassah – they provide treatment, follow-up, and support for patients. They also provide counseling and nutritional advice.
  3. Pediatric IBD center – in Shaari Tzedek, they specialize in helping children deal with Crohn's disease. They help people get help, as well as, help their families meet one another and provide support.
